Malia Obama, 25, debuts new name as she begins Hollywood career

Former first daughter Malia Obama, 25, has embarked on a Hollywood career, marking her directorial debut with the film “The Heart” at the Sundance Film Festival. Notably, the film’s credits didn’t feature her family surname; instead, she used the pseudonym Malia Ann. Born on July 4, 1998, Malia, a Harvard graduate, is venturing into screenwriting after growing up in the spotlight.

In 2021, she contributed to the writing team for the series “Swarm,” which streamed on Amazon Prime and featured notable cast members like Billie Eilish and Rory Culkin. Despite her lineage, executive producer Stephen Glover emphasized that Malia received no special treatment due to her presidential connections. He stated, “Nah, she’s very down to earth and cool. So, it’s not a problem at all.”

Malia’s talent has been praised by co-creator Janine Nabers, who remarked, “Some of her pitches were wild as hell, and they were just so good and so funny. She’s an incredible writer. She brought a lot to the table… She’s really, really dedicated to her craft.”

Her parents, Barack and Michelle Obama, expressed pride in her recent accomplishments. Barack wrote on Instagram, “Malia, I hope 25 brings you everything you’re looking for and more.” Michelle echoed similar sentiments, stating, “Happy birthday, Malia! I feel so lucky to be your mom and to be able to watch you become the wonderful young woman you are today.” From Malia Obama to Malia Ann, the President’s daughter is carving her path as a Hollywood screenwriter and director, promising a bright future.
